Thirteen New York law enforcement officers, as well as a New York State Trooper who died in 2011 from 9/11-linked cancer, were added to the New York State Fair’s law enforcement memorial.

U.S. Rep. John Katko, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, State Senator John DeFrancisco and New York State Police Superintendent George Beech were among those who spoke at the Friday afternoon ceremony.

Katko, R-Camillus, talked of his time as a federal prosecutor before entering politics and of the risks officers face on a day-to-day basis.

“They leave their families every morning or evening and go to work, never knowing whether they’ll be the next one to die in the line of duty.”

Katko said on average, one law enforcement officer dies in the line of duty in the U.S. every other day.

Schneiderman echoed similar sentiments.

“Today, let us honor, let us comfort the families, but let us also celebrate these heroes,” Schneiderman said. “They stood up for the law, they stood up for justice, they saved lives and that enduring legacy will never be forgotten.”
