A Bronx fraudster who has made a career out of posing as an immigration lawyer has been tossed in jail until he pays the restitution owed to his victims, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Monday.
Edwin Rivera, 68, has been preying on undocumented clients for years out of his office on Zerega Ave. called “Immigracion Hoy News Today.”
Bronx Supreme Court Justice Betty Owen Stinson said Rivera had been violating court orders to knock off the false advertising and “immigration services” and found him in contempt.
Rivera must now serve up to six months in jail until he pays $34,331 in fines and restitution, according to court papers.
“The arrest of Mr. Rivera underscores my office’s commitment to protecting all New Yorkers from unscrupulous immigration service providers,” Schneiderman said.
Rivera collected legal fees from clients to fill out their immigration applications. When the applications were filed improperly or not at all, Rivera refused to refund their money, Schneiderman said.
