U.S. Senator-elect Doug Jones, the Democrat who scored a major upset victory in Alabama over Republican Roy Moore, quietly received some help during his campaign from New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
Schneiderman headlined a New York City fundraising event for Jones on Nov. 13. The event drew about 300 people, including actors Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Josh Charles, Vincent Donofrio, Blythe Danner, and Piper Perabo, a source said.
The New York attorney general, who has received national attention for his numerous lawsuits against the Trump administration, has also headlined several other New York City events for Democrats across the country. Among them, Maine Attorney General Janet Mills, who is running for governor, Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, who won reelection, and the Democratic delegation of the Virginia House of Delegates.
“Eric has been very vocal about the need for progressives to ‘go local’ in races across the country ,” said a source close to Schneiderman. “He believes now it’s more important than every for Democrats to orgaize behind progressives up and down the ballot
“If we organize only in presidential election years, we lose. If we bring the same enthusiasm to state and local elections across the country that helped us win the Alabama Senate race, there’s nothing that can stop us.”
